Food is Medicine - How Manuka honey heals

Gather By's Australian Manuka honey is a powerful antibiotic, aids in burns and wound care, boosts your immune system, aids in gut health, and reduces dental plaque.

Now, based on scientific studies into the health benefits of Manuka honey, it might be time to put it back on the menu.

1. Australian Manuka honey is a powerful natural antibiotic

Science has found that not all honeys are created equally. As bees collect different nectar from flowering plants, the honey that they create has different properties. Research has found that bioactive honey has high levels of Methylglyoxal (MGO) and non peroxide-based antimicrobial activity (NPA). This gives the honey its powerful antibacterial properties.
You may have already heard of Manuka honey produced by bees from the nectar of the Australian native bush Leptospermum (aka Manuka or Jelly Bush). As an Australian autochthonous plant, many varieties of this Manuka bush grows naturally here. These local species of Leptospermum can produce more powerful nectars and high MGO honey than those in New Zealand.
What is most remarkable about this honey is that it not only kills bacteria, but importantly, bacteria do not develop any resistance to it - unlike most pharmaceutical antibiotics. So what we have here is a powerful, naturally-occurring, sustainable antibiotic

2. Manuka Honey can shorten the healing time for burns by almost 50%

In a recent study in the MY Hospital in India the effectiveness of honey in treating burns was compared to more traditional methods with stunning results. Not only did the burns that were treated with honey become sterile faster, but they also healed quicker – an average of 18 days versus 32 days using traditional treatment.
Manuka honey is now used in mainstream hospitals and medical centres around the world.

3. Manuka Honey can remove dental plaque

It seems counter-intuitive that something as sweet as honey can actually be good for your teeth, but science has shown that bioactive honey can reduce plaque build up more effectively than using mouth wash or chewing gum. Again, it’s the antibacterial properties found in honey that can heal gum diseases such as gingivitis which means healthier teeth and gums and better smelling breath.

4. Manuka Honey can aid in digestion

Manuka honey is a prebiotics. Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that have been shown to stimulate the activity of healthy micro flora (probiotics) leading to better digestive health and a stronger immune system. Prebiotics are found mainly in foods that contain natural sugars like some herbs, fruits like banana, some vegetables, breast milk and honey.

So putting that honey on your toast in the morning is doing you more good than you think!

5. Manuka Honey can boost your immune system

More research is showing us that compounds found in Manuka honey stimulates the production of cytokines in the body.
What’s a Cytokine?
Cytokine are the chemical messengers expressed by your immune cells to organise immune responses, such as the production of immune-boosting cells.
So a ‘spoon full of sugar’ may help the ‘medicine go down’ but if you swap it for a spoon full of honey, you may not need the medicine at all!
